Lewis and Osborn family papers, 1816-1860

Extent: 1 box (.3 linear feet)
The Lewis and Osborn family papers consist of approximately 75 items, primarily correspondence and legal documents relating to properties owned by Morgan Lewis and managed by various members of the Osborn family.  Additional material types include military and legal documents.  This collection provides insight into property and business management in New York City in the middle of the 19th century.  The collection includes oversize material.

Scope and Content:

The bulk of the collection is related to or written by Morgan Lewis, his daughter Margaret Lewis Livingston, and his son-in-law Maturin Livingston. Many of the documents are correspondence with various members of the Osborn family who acted as agents for members of the Lewis and Livingston families and pertain to the business and land dealings of Morgan Lewis and Margaret Livingston, as well as for other individuals’ properties, including Isaac Packard (d. 1846).  A large portion of the collection consists of various leases granted by Morgan Lewis. The property being discussed (being bought, rented out or leased) is mainly located in New York City—even though Morgan and Gertrude Lewis and son-in-law Maturin and daughter Margaret Lewis Livingston lived in Dutchess County during the time most of the documents were written.  The collection also includes business and personal documents pertaining to Osborn family, spanning two generations.   The Osborns acted as agents for the Morgan Lewis family in many of their business dealings.
